Superyacht security: expert insights from Ben Holmes, Praxis' Safety and Security Manager
Yacht ownership comes with a unique set of responsibilities, from meeting compliance requirements to safeguarding passengers and crew. For owners and captains, balancing these demands alongside day-to-day operations can be daunting.
Statistics illustrate the importance of robust security standards. In 2022, the Caribbean Safety and Security Net reported a 19% increase in offences against yachts, rising from 102 incidents in 2021 to 121 in 2022. These include incidents of trespassing, assaults and robberies. Additionally, SuperYacht Times recently highlighted a rise in yacht casualties, further evidence that proactive security strategies are vital.
In this article Ben, who brings extensive expertise to his role of Safety and Security Manager, shares his insights on the importance of regular security reviews, and the proactive steps yacht owners can take to safeguard their vessel and those who sail on it.
Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to yacht services?
My career began with a cadetship on passenger ships, where I gained my foundation degree in Nautical Science and a UK Certificate of Competency. Over the years, I’ve worked in roles both at sea and ashore, including as Deputy Designated Person Ashore (DPA) and Deputy Company Security Officer (CSO) at another leading UK yacht management company.
In those roles, I managed safety and security operations for multiple yachts, ensuring compliance and mitigating risks. Joining Praxis felt like a natural step to apply my experience within a team that prioritises innovative and tailored solutions combined with rigorous safety standards for yacht owners and captains worldwide.
What are the benefits to yacht owners of undergoing a security review?
Security reviews are an integral part of safeguarding yachts, their crew, and guests from potential threats. We conduct an assessment tailored to each vessel’s unique profile, reviewing vulnerabilities such as access points and onboard technology, while recommending measures to mitigate risks.
Ship security assessments help us evaluate the likelihood of security threats to a vessel. Based on this, we create a bespoke plan that includes practical security measures. Even for yachts not required to have a formal Ship Security Plan (SSP), security audits and best practices should be followed to enhance safety and security for everyone on board. Following correct procedures, such as keeping gangways lifted, when necessary, significantly limits risks.
As yachts can be targeted by unwelcome guests, these reviews are critical. They ensure captains and owners can stay one step ahead of potential risks, protecting both assets and people onboard. Regular security checks can also help broker better insurance rates - just as a well-maintained car retains its value, a yacht with an up-to-date security record can be viewed more favourably by insurance companies.
What are some of the unexpected challenges captains face in keeping yachts secure?
In my experience, issues like trespassing revelers may seem minor but they can escalate into significant safety concerns or reputational risks, particularly with high-profile owners. Social media is also a growing risk, with influencers or thrill-seekers attempting to board yachts for content. The reality is, many marinas are public spaces with people able to walk around and, given the opportunity, step aboard a vessel. Superyachts are particularly vulnerable in winter when fewer people are around to monitor activity.
TV shows like Below Deck have also opened a window into life aboard, which while not entirely accurate, has shaped public perception. The real challenge lies in ensuring that security measures are in place and followed consistently to prevent unauthorised access.
What role does technology play in modern yacht security?
Technology plays a critical role, but it works best when integrated with robust protocols and crew training. Advanced surveillance systems, motion detection, and access controls are valuable, but they must be part of a broader strategy. In my experience, combining technology with clear emergency procedures and crew readiness creates the strongest defence.
On some larger vessels, there is a dedicated security officer or gangway watch, which significantly enhances onboard security. However, even on smaller yachts, crew members with designated security duties who have completed the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) play a crucial role in maintaining vigilance.
One of the services Praxis offers is ISM LITE. What are the main benefits of this safety solution for yacht owners and captains?
ISM Lite streamlines compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and is a game-changer for yacht operations. Traditional systems tend to be overly complex and time-consuming, so ISM LITE’s user-friendly framework helps captains manage their safety and environmental responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
For captains and owners, this brings peace of mind in knowing that safety protocols are robust, risks are proactively managed, and compliance is simplified. It is especially valuable for yachts under 500 gross tones, where there is no regulatory requirement to have a formal SSP, yet implementing best practices is highly recommended.
What advice would you give to yacht owners and captains looking to enhance their safety and security measures?
We work with our clients to take a proactive and layered approach. We begin with a thorough assessment of the existing systems and protocols, identifying any gaps and addressing them using a combination of practical measures and advanced technology. Regular crew training is also vital, and we support that too. At the end of the day, security is only as strong as the people implementing it.
Engaging experts who can provide an objective perspective is also essential. Services like ISM LITE and our security reviews are designed to make this process straightforward and effective, helping captains and owners focus on enjoying their time on the water.
Looking ahead, what are you looking to achieve in your new role?
I’m excited to build on Praxis’ reputation for excellence in yacht services. Safety and security are constantly evolving, and staying ahead of emerging threats is of paramount importance.
