With 16 years at sea, in both private & commercial yachting, as well as commercial shipping, Giles applies his extensive seafaring experience to his shore-based role, which focuses on safety and operational management.
History
Giles holds a UK Certificate of Competency and worked as a chief officer and relief captain on both commercial and private yachts. He thrived in roles that involved more interesting and challenging projects, often on yachts in off-the-beaten-track destinations. Giles specialised in managing complex refits, re-commissioning vessels, and handling flag and classification surveys, which provided him with a deep understanding of yacht operations and compliance.
Roles and responsibilities
Giles is responsible for the safety, insurance, and operational management of the yachts, including monitoring onboard safety maintenance, crew training, and surveys. He conducts pre-survey audits and serves as a liaison between the yacht and the flag and classification societies, while also providing a 24-hour emergency contact. Additionally, he ensures that all yacht certificates are valid and renewed, oversees yacht registration, and manages the insurance process, including renewals, policy reviews, and claims management on behalf of the yachts.
Giles works closely with the yacht safety team and other yacht services colleagues to ensure each yacht operates safely and within applicable regulations. Since joining, he has developed a digital Safety Management System (SMS) specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of each yacht. Giles is also committed to expanding the fleet of yachts under the company's full safety management services, driving growth and ensuring that safety standards remain a top priority across all vessels.
About me
"I enjoy running, swimming, and skiing, and once held the record for the fastest time to complete France's 3 Valley Ski Rally. I am currently restoring a classic sailing yacht, am a governor of the local school and support the village community and sports centre."
